A Queens man who led police on a wild chase through several New Jersey and New York counties Tuesday night stopped his vehicle hours later and jumped off a 140-foot-high bridge. The man, identified as 39-year-old John Fuller, was rescued from the cold waters of the Hudson River by the officers, and his condition was reported to be critical as of Wednesday morning.
According to authorities, the chase began Tuesday evening after Fuller failed to stop for a routine truck inspection in Parsippany, NJ. When the officers tried to stop him he led them in a chase from across the George Washington Bridge and then north into Bronx and Westchester counties.
He finally stopped at Tappan Zee Bridge and jumped off it.
According to Journal News reports, the man resisted the rescuers' attempt to save him and urged them to shoot him. He was transported to Westchester Medical Center.
Fuller's reason for trying to avoid the officers was not immediately clear.
