A man riding a motorcycle was killed Wednesday after he was hit by lightning on highway, US 36.

The Westminster Fire Department stated that the man was struck while driving between Church Ranch Boulevard and Sheridan Boulevard at approximately 5:15 pm, according to the website, WFMY2.

After the motorcyclist was hit, he lost control and hit the center divider. The motorbike landed 150 yards away from where the lightning struck the asphalt.WFMY2 reports, rescue workers were unable to rescue the man and he died on the scene of the accident.

Authorities declined to release his identity pending notification of family.

The lightning managed to create a hole in the asphalt, about 18 inches long, eight inches wide and four inches deep.

US 36 was shut down for two hours due to the accident.
