After 37 rats and six cats were seized from the filthy cabin of his sailboat, a man now faces charges of cruelty to animals and confining animals in too small of a space.
In 2006 authorities discovered Roger Dier of Petaluma to be living with 1,300 rats and evicted him from his one-bedroom home. Shortly thereafter Dier bought a 29-foot sailboat.
However, his home was covered with rat droppings and reeking of urine in June. The rats were also stacked in overcrowded cages and many had missing eyes and limbs.
Jeff Charter, a senior animal control officer told AP, "The cabin was covered with urine and feces."
Most of the animals appeared to be in good condition and were taken to a shelter.
