A 26-year-old man who lives in Oregon has created what he believes to be the heaviest rubber-band ball ever. Steve Milton's ball weighs 3,300 pounds and stands nearly five feet tall. It currently takes up half his garage, and Milton says he wants to put at least 1,000 more pounds on it.
Milton is keeping the public posted on the ball's ever-growing size on his MySpace page. He's also uploaded videos of the ball crushing stuff. One video shows a forklift dropping it on an old van.
Milton tells The Register-Guard newspaper, "It was awesome. It completely flattened the roof and blew the doors off."
But the ball isn't used only as a tool of destruction. Milton's putting it on display at a food and toy drive in Eugene Friday, and he's challenging people to match the ball's weight in donations.
Lou McKibben, president of Dykema Rubber Band Company, says Milton is one of many who order rubber bands from his company with a plan of breaking the record. He says he realized Milton wasn't like the rest, however, when he put in an order for 1,000 pounds of 12-inch rubber bands.
Dykema cut Milton a deal on the another 2,000 pounds, and Milton kept his project going.
McKibben says, "They reach a point where it gets too big or they get tired of it, but Steve persevered. Now he's won the crown."
