A 35-year-old caterer experimented how many trash a person can save in a year. Ari Derfel, lead a trashy life starting Jan. 1, 2007 and hopes to end his experiment on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007.
Derfel, a Barkeley caterer, accumulated about 96 cubic feet of trash, which he saved over the past year to see how much garbage one person creates.
In a statement, the Californian expressed his views about environment and conservation that the experiment started as a way to determine his own consumption habits.
Derfel said, "When we throw something away, what does 'away' mean? There's no such thing as 'away.'"
All of his garbage, including tissue papers, receipts, food wrapper and plastic bottles were put in bins in the living room and kitchen of the apartment and he composts his food scraps.
Derfel said he eventually hopes to give all his trash to the sculptor.
