Police in the Chicago suburb of Algonquin is looking for a man who has been getting facials and body scrubs and leaving without paying. The man, who has been nicknamed "Spa-bandit" by some, has robbed as many as 20 spas for several thousand dollars worth of services.
According to officials investigating the case, the man has been operating since March 2006, targeting spas in Chicago, northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.
He usually checks in under the alias of "Scott Kendry," Algonquin Police Detective Andrew Doles told the AP.
The man goes for all sorts of treatments from facials to pedicures and haircutting and coloring to sea salt body polish. But as soon as the spa technicians are ready to give him a massage, he leaves the building saying he needs to use his cell phone or get some papers from his car. The man leaves and never returns, Dole said.
The man also gives a romantic explanation for the beauty treatment.
"He said, 'Well, it's a new year and my wife thinks I should take better care of myself and I want to spend the whole day here getting services,'" Jacquie Kacena of Bella Vita Salon and Day Spa for Men and Women told the AP of her encounter with the man on Jan. 4.
Some spas have also submitted the man's video recorded visit to Algonquin Police. Officials say they are investigating the case and have appealed to the public to report if they ever happen to exchange paths with the "Spa bandit."
