A man shot in his leg while trying to stop a street robbery on Wednesday turned out to be a robber himself, police said Friday. Police checked the man's record while he was in the hospital and discovered he had a 1996 arrest warrant. He was taken to prison and ordered to serve a 7-year sentence.A police spokeswoman tells Reuters, "What started as an apparent altruistic act had a quite unexpected finish. The waiter, considered until then a hero, turned out to be a convicted runaway." Police were examining the victim's testimony to see if the man was really protecting her from the attackers or was involved in the robbery.The woman had just left a bank in downtown Rio and was carrying an envelop when she was attacked.
