The Spotsylvania County sheriff has suspended the practice of allowing unmarried detectives to receive sexual services while investigating suspected prostitution. Spotsylvania County Sheriff Howard Smith defended the practice earlier this week. But he released a statement today announcing the policy's suspension due to overwhelming public response.

A Virginia sheriff says sexual services are okay in the line of duty. Spotsylvania County Sheriff Howard Smith says it's okay to allow detectives to receive sexual services in the course of their investigations so they can catch suspects in the act. Smith said the measures are needed to bring felony sex charges rather than misdemeanors. He compared the practice to drug stings in which undercover officers buy illicit narcotics from suspected dealers.
