A Sharon, Mass. man expects the giant pumpkin he has been growing in his back yard to tip the scales at a record 1,800 pounds when it is weighed on Oct. 11.
Steve Connolly reportedly planted the squash on May 1 and pollinated it on July 3.
He has been feeding the plant with North American Kelp, cow manure, maple leaf compost, seaweed fertilizer and Neptune's Harvest fish fertilizer. To help it develop a strong, large root system, Connolly said he used a naturally occurring root stimulating fungi to help the plant develop a massive root system that could more efficiently take in nutrients, according to reports.
As the monster plant has grown, the pumpkin has reportedly packed on up to 45 pounds per day.
The pumpkin will be plucked on Oct. 10 and transported to Frerich's Farm in Warren, Mass. where it will be weighed and compete with more than 50 other entrants from New England for the prize as the largest pumpkin. Representatives from Guinness World Records will be there to verify if the pumpkin sets a new record.
Rhode Island set the current United States record for the biggest pumpkin at 1,689 pounds.
