A Mexican smuggler is arrested with 88 pounds of cheese hidden in a secret compartment in his truck.
The Chevy truck was stopped for a routine secondary examination when officers using an X-ray machine saw the outline of 16 packages hidden behind the seat.
At first, they thought illegal drugs were in the bulky packages.
Customs and Border Protection spokesman Roger Maier tells Reuters, "Generally if you see something (with the X-ray machine) you expect it to be narcotics, but this turned out to be cheese."
Maier says officers are used to confiscating drugs at Mexico border crossings, but cheese is unusual.
He says, "It looks like it was destined for people who wanted a taste of the old country."
Police at the port of entry in Columbus, New Mexico arrested the 38-year-old driver, and impounded the cheese and the truck.
