According to the AP, when Fidel Castro dies, the city of Miami is going to throw a huge party at Little Havana's Orange Bowl Stadium. And not only that; a special committee is being appointed to decide what will be on the event t-shirts, who will perform at the celebration, and just how long the celebration is going to last. The committee is not concentrating on Castro's death, but on the festivities of the biggest event in the lives of Cubans.
The Orange Bowl was not chosen randomly. Tomas Ragalado, City Commissioner and Cuban American, wanted to use the stadium because in 1961 it was where President Kennedy promised a free Cuba after the Bay of Pigs. Also, the stadium was used as a camp for Mariel refugees in 1980. Ragalado compares the celebration to the Falling of the Berlin Wall. The stadium will not be a mandatory site for the event. The streets of Little Havana most likely will be filled with merriment as well.
Leader of the Democracy Movement organization in Miami, Ramon Saul Sanchez, after pointing out that communist government will still be in place and under the rule of Castro's brother, Raul, has concerns about the people outside the Cuban exile community and how they will see this celebration. The Miami Herald reported that Sanchez would like for the event to focus more around a "protest concert."
