A string of mishaps including a missing corpse lead to the suspension of the Massachusetts Chief Medical Examiner.
According to the Associated Press, state police found the body of a missing Cape Cod man buried in the wrong place after he was misidentified by the state medical examiner's office. The body that was supposed to be buried was still being stored at the office.
This mistake was realized when the body of the man who was supposed to be buried was discovered in the office. They then dug up the grave and discovered the missing Cape Cod man.
Gov. Deval Patrick placed Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Mark Flomenbaum on a leave of absence after the body, which was sent to the pathology lab and autopsied on April 23, came up missing.
But this was not the first reported mishap at the examiner's office. In 2005, the office was accused of sending the wrong set of infant eyeballs to be tested for baby shaken baby syndrome.
After that incident, Flomenbaum took over. Since then the office has had issues with a backlog of bodies. They reportedly had to start stacking the corpses on top of one another and keeping them in a freezer, intended for temporary use.
The Executive Office of Public Safety has taken over the investigation of the missing Cape Cod corpse.
