Welcome to your new condo. Oh, and don't mind the long line to the soup kitchen.

New multi-million dollar condos are being built over a church, homeless shelter, and soup kitchen. Since 1865, the First Congregational Church of Christ has dug its roots into the ground at 10th and G Street NW serving the community and it's not going anywhere.

So what's a determined developer to do? Compromise. What else?

As part of the deal, the developer, PN Hoffman, is going to build a new sanctuary for First congregational, which will occupy the first two floors of the high-dollar condominium. How high? Think $400,000 to $500,000 for a one bedroom. Oh, you need two bedrooms? That's going to cost you a sweet million.

When asked if the church and homeless service center will keep prospective buyers away, David DeSantis, Vice President of PN Hoffman, didn't think so because the units are conveniently located downtown and also a "knockout."

First congregational Church of Christ is going to be a "knockout," too, with a sanctuary that seats 350 people, along with an office, meetings rooms, and dining area. There is one catch, however. The church members will have to move to a temporary location until 2010.

Oh, well, as the saying goes, "Good things come to those who wait."
