The London Natural History Museum is exhibiting one of the largest giant squids ever put on display.
BBC News reports that a trawler captured the squid off the coast of the Falkland Islands. Measuring 28 feet, it is one of the most complete squids ever found.
It took months for researchers to preserve the creature for display in a 30 foot long glass tank.
Giant squids are rarely observed as they live at depths of between 656 and 3,281 feet. They can weigh up to 2,204 pounds.
The largest squid ever seen measured nearly 61 feet. It was spotted in 1880 off Island Bay in New Zealand.
Ablett, mollusc curator at the Natural History Museum, says, "Most giant squid tend to be washed up dead on beaches, or retrieved from the stomach of sperm whales, so they tend to be in quite poor condition."
He says finding such a large, complete specimen is rare.
