A traveling exhibition based on broken relationships has arrived in Berlin where it is proving to be popular.

Aptly named The Museum of Broken Relationships, it asks people in each city it comes to, to donate memorabilia of their terminated relationships, from brief flings to long painful divorces.

Donors are asked to include a short description of what the object means to them, the time of the relationship, and where they are from.

In East Berlin, the exhibition is set up in an old squat and is proving to be a hit with the locals, with the collection of memorabilia growing on a daily basis. Items donated so far include a wedding dress and an axe used to break an ex-girlfriend's furniture.

Zvonimir Dobrovic who is organizing the Berlin show told BBC News: "It's such a nice, simple idea, because everyone can relate to it. It's not pretentious, it's interactive, a place where people can present their own stories and compare them to others."

"Even if the objects seem ordinary the stories are very individual and they make the exhibition come alive. People really enjoy being here, we get couples who spend a long time here, looking and laughing and hoping it never happens to them, and then people who've just broken up who want to tell us their stories", Dobrovic added.

The idea came when two Zagreb-based artists Olinka Vistica and Drazen Grubisic split up and wanted to do something creative with what they were going through.

After Berlin, the museum travels to Belgrade, Skopje and Stockholm. Plans are in the pipeline to take it to New York, Tokyo and Sao Paulo.
