An Illinois auto museum is offering $1 million for the car in which actor James Dean rode to his death in 1955. The car's whereabouts are unknown.

Dean wrecked the '55 Porsche 550 Spyder on September 30, 1955 on a California highway. The mangled car was bought by car customizer George Barris, who created the customized 1949 Mercury Dean drove in the film, "Rebel Without a Cause."

Barris is known for having created the Batmobile for the 1960's TV series, "Batman," as well as the Munster Koach used in "The Munsters," among other popular TV and movie cars.

He also had a hand in customizing the ill-fated Porsche for Dean adding the number "130" and the nickname "Little Bastard" on the back of the car.

After purchasing it, Barris sent the wrecked Porsche across the country as part of a police safety demonstration. The car vanished after one such Florida appearance.

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dean's death, the Volo Auto Museum in Volo, Illinois is displaying artifacts from the crash, including a passenger-side door from the car. The museum says it will pay $1 million to anyone who comes forward with the vehicle.

In order for the seller to receive the $ 1 million, the car must first be authenticated by Barris.
