The new edition of the game Monopoly will feature major companies such as McDonald's, Starbucks and Motorola.
Instead of an old shoe, McDonald's French Fries will be a player piece along with a Starbucks coffee cup, a Toyota Prius car, a Motorola RAZR phone and a New Balance running shoe.
The "Here and Now" U.S. edition of the board game will feature Times Square instead of Boardwalk, among other changes.
Hasbro, the game's maker, insists that including the popular brands is not an advertising ploy.
Pat Riso, a spokesperson for Hasbro, tells Reuters, "There was no money involved in the deal. This is not a corporate sponsorship... We believe that these brands reflect America's pop culture today."
Commercial Alert, a nonprofit group that aims to keep commercial culture from exploiting children, is angered over Monopoly's new additions.
Gary Ruskin, executive director of the group, says, "Shame on Hasbro for hawking junk food and caffeine to children... Hasbro is toying with the health of our children. Maybe it thinks the childhood obesity epidemic is just a game, but parents know better."
