A man from New York will attempt for the third time to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Cape Verde in western Africa to the New York harbor in the U.S. in December to raise awareness on AIDS.
Victor Mooney, 43, of Forest Hills will use the boat Never Give Up donated by French adventurer Charlie Girard in rowing from San Antao to the Brooklyn Bridge on December 1 or World AIDS Day.
The stunt is dubbed Goree Challenge 3 after Goree island in Senegal, where Mooney first tried to cross the Atlantic Ocean on May 7, 2006 but failed because his boat leaked and sank three hours after he started sailing.
Mooney, who lost a brother to AIDS and has another battling the disease, tried to cross the Atlantic Ocean the second time on April 16 but aborted it 16 days later because his water desalinator systems broke down.
A Canadian ferry company will bring Never Give Up and Mooney from Nova Scotia, Canada to the World's Fair Marina, Queens, New York on Monday as part of the preparation for Goree Challenge 3.
