A recent survey conducted to mark National Geographic's awareness week has revealed that a third of Britons do not know the exact location of the world's tallest peak, Mount Everest believing the mountain lies somewhere in Europe.

Aside from the Everest confusion, the survey also bared that half of the Britons are not aware that the Nile is the world's longest river.

Interestingly, for many adult Britons, their most visited local "landmark" is a DIY store nearest them.

According to the survey, one of three Britons believe that Everest is located either at the Alps in Switzerland or somewhere in UK, while about 50% of the respondents knew that the Nile River in Egypt is the world's longest

But when queried regarding any facility they have visited regularly for the past months, 39 percent answered the DIY superstore with only 9 percent going for the local museum.

"Geography helps us make sense of the world and face vital issues such as climate change, energy, food production, the 'war on terror', water and poverty," David Lambert, chief executive of the Geographical Association, said in describing the objective of the survey.
