Unemployed workers gathered in New York's Tompkins Square Park Tuesday, during what was normally a lunch hour, to enjoy the Unemployment Olympics. Organizers reason this is the first, and they hope last, event of its kind.
Nick Goddard, 26, who lost his job as a computer programmer last month, said he came up with the idea for the Unemployment Olympics because he wanted to "battle all the unemployed people for stuff," the New York Times reported.
Four events were planned for the unemployed: "Pin the Blame on the Boss," a "You're Fired" race, a pińata-bashing, and a fax machine toss. At the last minute, the parks department nixed the toss, so "Office Phone Skee-Ball" was substituted, which at least involved throwing office equipment of some type.
Goddard and friends made a makeshift "Unemployment Office" from cardboard, and this is where participants came to register-only after showing proof of their unemployment in the form of a letter of dismissal from a former boss or an unemployment card, the NYTimes reported.
When the pińata was smashed, candy that fell from it included PayDays candy bars. The event ended with the "You're Fired" race, where out-of-work, would-be Olympians sprinted to see who could get to the cardboard unemployment office first.
