Giant Panda Gives Birth In San Diego Zoo

A giant panda at the San Diego Zoo is a proud new mama. After 2 1/2 hours in labor, Bai Yun gave birth to her fourth cub. Officials found out she was pregnant July 18 after they detected a heartbeat and saw the fetus on an ultrasound. The panda's sex is unknown and the head of the zoo's panda program says all they've seen so far is the tail.

China Sees Profit In Panda Poop By Making Souvenirs

In an attempt to gain awareness for the endangered panda bear, the world's largest giant panda research base in southwest China's Sichuan Province has developed a dung-for-profit scheme that makes souvenirs from the animal's waste. Now you can have odor-free souvenirs ranging from bookmarks to Olympic-themed statues of the animals made especially by the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding center, which houses about 40 bamboo-fed pandas that produce almost a ton of dung a day.

Red Panda Fools Zoo Officials Twice To Escape Out

For the second time in less than a month, a 1-year-old red panda was discovered missing from her exhibit in Virginia's Zoo Saturday. Earlier in June 21, Yin went missing on the day of her first appearance for two hours until she emerged from a nearby tree. Yin, that resembles a raccoon with red, white and black fur, was first discovered near the bison exhibit, until she dashed to a tree near the back of the duck pond. She also was found hiding in a tree near the duck pond after she escaped the first time.

China Plans To Produce Paper From Panda Poop

In a bid to make use of nearly two tons of fibrous panda poop that animals drop each day, researchers at China's Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Base in central-western Sichuan province are seeking to join hands with area paper mills. The catch: processing of the excrements of the grisly mammals into valuable office quality paper. According to Liao Jun, a researcher at the panda reserve, the idea of turning panda poop into paper came from Thailand where conversion of elephant dung into a variety of products such as artificial flowers, gift boxes and photo frames, is hugely popular.

New York Woman Gets Help From Her Seeing Eye Horse

A New York woman has some help getting around from her seeing eye horse. Ann Edie, 58, has been using her miniature horse as a guide horse since 2003. Panda is 29 inches tall and 120 pounds. Edie's seeing eye dog died after 10 years working for her and she tried out two other dogs before she learned about guide horses. Edie owns two other horses and thought it sounded like a good idea.
