Gold Coast police on Sunday said they have fined a parent caught providing alcohol to a teenager during end-of-the-term school celebrations in Queensland, Australia.

Queensland Police spokeswoman Melanie Loy said the parent, a woman, was slapped with a $600 fine.

She said, "A woman was issued with a $600 fine for supplying alcohol to a 17-year-old and that 17-year-old was also issued with a fine for possession of alcohol but otherwise everyone's been on their best behavior."

She added, "This is the first time that we've issued a fine for a person, an adult, who has supplied a child with alcohol."

"Police are serious about targeting this kind of activity and it is a warning to parents that if you are going to supply your children with alcohol we will be on the lookout for that."

On Saturday night, a total of 128 people were arrested in a club for underage drinking, but only 33 were actually below the required age.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has earlier urged parents to stamp out underage drinking among their children.
