Koda had recently joined the Deschutes County deputies as a patrol dog and was doing well in his law-enforcement duties, but apparently his impulsiveness cost him his life. The 2-year-old Belgian malinois died on Monday after he chewed up the car seats of the sheriff's department patrol car.

According to the sheriff's department, Koda might have been trying to relieve his boredom when he chewed through the seats of the cruiser and choked on a piece of foam.

The officials concluded that Koda's death could not be blamed on the negligence of the officer who was handling the canine at the time.

"Many police dogs are high-drive dogs. They have to do something. It's like ADHD," Capt. Tim Edwards told the Bend Bulletin.
