A Chinese performance artist makes an appearance in city court, after wading naked into the rapids above Niagara Falls as part of a stunt gone wrong.

He Yun Chang, 38, of Beijing is charged with disorderly conduct and exposing himself in public, both violations, after being arrested by Niagara Park Police Saturday afternoon.

He is ordered to return to court on November 4.

Police say He Yun stripped off his clothes and waded to within 40 to 50 yards of the brink of the falls. He tried anchoring himself with a rope to an unknown object; his intention was to stay in the water for 24 hours. However, the knot came loose and he began trying to make his way back to shore.

A tourist, who feared the stunt was a suicide attempt, called park police, who helped He Yun out of the water and placed him in custody.

Two students from the University of Buffalo who filmed the spectacle were charged with disorderly conduct.

Chang is in the U.S. for a University of Buffalo exhibit, titled, "The Wall: Reshaping Contemporary Chinese Art."
