People aren't the only ones making New Year's resolutions to lose a few pounds. According to veterinarians and pet owners in Britain, 33 percent of pets were considered to be overweight and 38 percent of pet owners says their animals put on weight during the Christmas holiday. Overweight pets can face a host of illnesses, like humans, including diabetes, arthritis and heart conditions, according to research released Friday.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, animal welfare workers are finding an abundance of puppies springing up throughout the devastated streets of New Orleans and Mississippi. Although more than 6,000 pets were saved in the region after Katrina, thousands of other animals are running loose in neighborhoods where fences were flattened and where their owners fled.

A Virginia jury convicted a dog owner of involuntary manslaughter after her pit bills killed an 82-year-old woman. Dorothy Sullivan was attacked by three pit bills March 8 while walking her shih tzu.

Internet powerhouse and auction site eBay Inc. has scrapped plans for members to allow live pets to be sold on its Web site after being deluged by thousands of angry letters from users. The internet site has previously prevented users to sell live animals except fish and snails, and company officials on Monday report they were putting a halt to plans creating a separate classifieds category that would feature free ads from animal shelters and paid ads from breeders.
