A new magnet school specializing in peace education opens Tuesday in northwest Philadelphia, in response to the city's district military academies.
The newly converted Parkway Northwest High School for Peace and Social Justice was developed by community activists seeking an alternative to those lessons being taught at neighboring military academies.
The school's mission is educating students on peaceful solutions to local and global conflicts.
There are 260 students enrolled in grades nine through 12.
According to The Associated Press
"HIPHOP" teaches conflict resolution, self-awareness and multicultural sensitivities.
Several peace seminars are also planned, with special speakers and performances to be held throughout the year.
