A 53-year-old man from Albuquerque, New Mexico, who was previously arrested on 27 counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, was yet again arrested Wednesday evening, marking his 28th such offense. Joseph Brill, who was on parole for two of the convictions, was driving on a withdrawn license when deputies saw him park in a driveway and fall out of his pickup truck Wednesday evening.
According to a criminal report, Brill smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. He also declined to be tested for breath analysis and was unable to perform a sobriety test.
The officers, who also found an open container of beer in his truck, were determined to send Brill to jail to teach him a lesson. AP quotes Sheriff Darren White as saying, "He needs to go to prison, and that's the way we're going to insure he does not drive a car drunk."
Police records show that Brill has been arrested on 27 counts of DUI offenses with at least 14 convictions before his arrest Wednesday. Additionally, his license has been revoked five times and he has spent nearly four years in New Mexico jails and prisons on DUI charges.
New Mexico law can send a person to prison for three years if he or she is caught for a seventh or subsequent DUI. It also includes a $5,000 fine, alcohol treatment and a lifetime driver's license revocation.
