A gang of Brazilian prisoners spent months planning and toiling to dig a tunnel in attempts to ensure their freedom. Little did they know the tunnel would lead them right into the prison yard.

The prisoners at Timoteo prison in southern Brazil, dug out of their tunnel, which took 67 men several months to complete, just 12 inches shy of the main perimeter wall.

Prison guards knew of the escape plan but decided to wait and see what would happen. They stood at the tunnel's exit and surprised the men as soon they emerged. The disappointed prisoners were escorted back to their cells.
