After waiting for nearly a decade, workers at an Amsterdam zoo are finally celebrating the birth of a baby beast. And the credit goes to Akili, a male gorilla imported from a German safari park.
Akili pleased the employees at Artis Zoo Tuesday morning, after a healthy baby gorilla was born to a female beast named Binti. The reason for the amusement is that previous efforts by zookeepers to mate their female gorillas with two other males had failed.
All the efforts by the zoo authorities, including parenthood trainings and birth films shown to gorillas, didn't help to produce any offspring.
Finally, in September 2005, Akili, a then 12-year-old gorilla, was brought to the zoo, who quickly impregnated Binti as well as two other females, Dafina and Shindy, according to the Associated Press reports.
Binti gave birth to the baby gorilla on Tuesday, while Dafina and Shindy are both due in late summer.
According to zoo authorities, gorillas have a low sex drive and low sperm count, which makes the fruitful mating a rare chance.
