Linda Marks is a Florida psychic who has recently gained notoriety, not for her success as a psychic, but for her lengthy rap sheet.
Marks was previously sued by over a dozen former clients who say she stiffed them out of over $1 million when they visited her Delray Beach business. She and her husband, James, pleaded guilty in December 2002 to reporting their car stolen to defraud their insurance company. They were placed on five years' probation.
The state attorney's office is now seeking to revoke Linda Marks' probation, citing an arrest in April in which she is accused of scamming another customer. Anna Stek claims that Marks robbed her of $38,000.
She went to Marks, who used the name "Laura," for readings between July and October of 2004. Marks claimed Stek had been evil in a former life, as a result her and her family were cursed. Marks' needed an $8,000 cash advance to "cleanse" and lift the curse. This was followed by another $10,000 cash advance on her Visa credit card.
Marks then said she needed another $14,000 to cure a curse on Stek's daughter, who supposedly had AIDS and would die if the money was not paid. Stek subsequently mortgaged her house to get the money.
The psychic promised to return the "cleansed" money to Stek, but kept avoiding her. The incident was not immediately reported by Stek, who feared her daughter's safety might be placed in jeopardy.
Marks has since told Boynton Beach police that the money was a loan to pay some bills and that she has promised to repay it.
According to court records, James Marks told police, "we have agreed to pay the man back $2,000 per month until it is paid off."
When detectives informed Marks the vicitim was a woman, he suddenly became quiet and ended the conversation, realizing they were referring to another debt.
