One of only eight known photographs of Florence Nightingale goes on display in the United Kingdom Monday.

The black-and-while photo shows Nightingale reading in front of her family home in Hampshire.

Taken in 1858, the photo was snapped by a local pharmacist Nightingale met while gathering medical supplies for her trip to the Crimea.

Three photo albums found recently in the area contained the Nightingale photo.

Mark Bostridge, author of a forthcoming Nightingale biography, tells The Associated Press, "This is an immensely exciting discovery... Photographs of Florence Nightingale are very rare."

Nightingale did not like publicity, as she believed it would take away from her work on improving conditions in British hospitals.

She became famous for leading a team of nurses who treated soldiers kept in appalling conditions during the Crimean War.

Her latest photograph is being shown at the Florence Nightingale Museum in London to mark the 150th anniversary of her return from the Crimea.
