The 20-foot-tall plastic volcano started emitting black smoke and flames at about 6:40 p. m. because of a malfunctioning of the internal speaker. The flames were put out by firefighters and an automatic sprinkler head mounted above the volcano. However, the entire volcano melted during the "eruption. "
