An 8-year-old Florida third grader who brought a loaded handgun to his school and showed it to a classmate on Friday has been charged by police and suspended by the school.
Aside from charging the unnamed student of Walker Elementary School with illegally bringing a deadly weapon to school, Fort Lauderdale police plans to charge the owner of the 9mm pistol with improper storage of a firearm. Meanwhile, school district spokeswoman Nadine Drew said the boy will be expelled, according to the Miami Herald.
Police were called to the school at 1001 NW Fourth St. after the boy's classmate and teacher reported the incident to school administrators. Police found the gun without a bullet in its chamber but with a loaded magazine.
The incident happened just two days after a student at Dillard High School, also in Fort Lauderdale, shot a fellow student dead. The shooter, Teah Wimberly, has been charged with the murder of her best friend, Amanda Collette.
