In the midst of rising gas prices, one Wisconsin teacher decides to take an alternative form of transportation. Arcadia art teacher Carl McKeeth is riding his horse to work each day, saving some $40 a week on gas.

In a bid to prevent beach-loving students from skipping classes, an Australian high school makes surfing an approved subject. Byron Bay High School will introduce surfing as a recreation course starting next year, reports The Associated Press.

A new magnet school specializing in peace education opens Tuesday in northwest Philadelphia, in response to the city's district military academies. The newly converted Parkway Northwest High School for Peace and Social Justice was developed by community activists seeking an alternative to those lessons being taught at neighboring military academies.

Caterina Bonci is accusing Catholic Church authorities of firing her because she is too attractive to teach religion after 14 years on the job. The Church, however, says she was removed from the central Adriatic city of Fano because she is divorced. Bonci says that she has never hidden her 2000 divorce from Church authorities, dresses down when teaching and defended her right to dress how she likes in her private life, according to Reuters.
