Several New York City residents pitched in Thursday to lift a five-ton bus off a dying pregnant woman, saving her unborn baby in the process. New York City Police Department traffic agent Donnette Sanz, 33, was crossing a Bronx street when a van struck her, knocking her into the path of a 10,000-pound school bus. She was run over and pinned under the bus.

For some people the first puff of smoke they tried felt repulsive while for others those puffs came with a rush of pleasure. Researchers have identified a gene variant that may help explain why some smokers get addicted from their first cigarette while others seem immune to the addictive properties of tobacco. The paper published online in the journal Addiction reports an association between a variant in the nicotine receptor gene CHRNA5, initial smoking experiences and current smoking patterns. This gene is far more common among smokers than in those who have the occasional cigarette.

A Gwinnett County teen died after completing two-hours of football conditioning workout Monday night, autopsy showed the player had an enlarged heart. The 13-year-old player identified as Jacheem Xavier was working out with teammates on his Gwinnett Youth Football League team at Shiloh High School Monday night prior to the incident.
