Scientists at the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, England used a food additive based on fumaric acid to decrease the odor of cows' gas by up to 70 percent. The acid is a chemical that is essential to animal and vegetable respiration, reports Reuters.

Fourteen percent of methane in the world comes from the belching and breaking wind of farm animals. Other sources include landfills, coal mines, rice paddies and bogs.

If an evaluation of the additive is successful, it could significantly cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.
