Disabled Pageant Winner Stands And Loses Her Crown

April 1, 2005
Janeal Lee has muscular dystrophy and uses a scooter to get around, but a snapshot showing her standing has cost her title as Ms. Wheelchair Wisconsin. The national board is supporting state pageant officials in their decision claiming a photo taken by a local newspaper would send the wrong message to other contestants and runs the risk of offending many as well. In the picture, Lee is seen standing with some of the students she teaches at Kaukauna High School. The national treasurer says pageant contestants are mostly seen in their scooters or wheelchairs. Judy Hoit also says "We can't have title holders out there walking when they're seen in the public. " Lee, who's 30, had hoped to compete in the national pageant along with her sister who will represent Minnesota. But, now she is disappointed saying "I've been made to feel as if I can't represent the disabled citizens of Wisconsin because I'm not disabled enough. " Runner-up Michelle Kearney of Milwaukee will now represent Wisconsin in this summer's national competition in New York.
