The Brown County District Attorney's office had cleared Dennis Kocken from the March 7 crash but the County Sheriff could not clam his conscience for he believed the accident occurred due to his mistake. Pressed by his interior, the 52-year-old officer finally wrote himself a ticket on March 27 for an unsafe lane change, a violation that carries a $160.80 fine.
Recalling the incident to the Green Bay Press Gazette, Kocken said that he was following an apparent speeder last month when he suddenly changed the lane to avoid a snow-removal vehicle in his lane and rear-ended the speeding vehicle. Coincidentally, the driver of that vehicle slowed down to make a turn, causing it to crash with Sheriff's county-owned Ford 500 behind.
After an investigation of the crash, the district attorney's office found that Kocken could not held accountable for the crash.
"But it kept bothering me," Kocken told the Green Bay Press Gazette. "Finally I decided to write myself a ticket. I felt it was the right thing to do."
