A woman has critically wounded the deputy of a Burke county sheriff by shooting him in the neck. The incident which occurred on Wednesday morning followed a 12-hour long standoff outside the woman's mobile house.

Eva Joyce Nelson, 60, of Suburban Road off Enola Road was arrested and transported to Broughton Hospital, reports the Hickory Record.

Nelson had shot Martin Lawing, 31, when he was trying to serve her commitment papers.

She had started shooting at the officials since they appeared on her doorstep on Tuesday night.

Nelson finally surrendered at around 7 am on Wednesday but only after the authorities tossed canisters of tear gas at her home, reports The Charlotte Observer.

Meanwhile, Lawing had been taken to Grace Hospital in Morgantown and then airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

He is reported to be in a critical condition.
