A Michigan man attempting to shoplift from a local store stuffed a number of hunting knives down his pants, tripped while trying to flee the store, and stabbed himself.

The 26-year old suspect, who was said to have attempted to steal $300 worth of knives from the Knapp's Corner Meijer store, sustained puncture wounds to his abdomen, said officials. Recounting the incident, police said that the man got into a scuffle with the security guards, resulting in him falling on the knives.

"I saw a man laying down on the mat by the carts, a knife by him with blood on the full blade of the knife" the Grand Rapids Press quoted witness Heather Dodd. "It was not a dull kitchen knife or a sharp butcher's knife. It was something in between."

Dodd continued, "Someone was holding him down, so I just walked around him, grabbed my cart, made sure everything was OK and got out of the way."

The man was immediately taken to the hospital after the incident, and it was determined that the stab wounds were not life-threatening, according to an AP report.

Store officials are expected to deliberate on the situation, considering that the scuffle that occurred between the man and the security guards may point to a subversion of company policy against touching customers.
