Former Slave Appointed Paraguay Cabinet Minister
Newly elected Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo named a former slave as his Minister for Indigenous Affair. Margarita Mbywangi, 46, an Ache tribal chief, was captured in the jungle when she was four and sold several times as a slave to owners of large lands. Fortunately, her masters send her to school which enabled her to learn to read and write.
Blackbeard's Ship To Be Fully Excavated In 3 Years
Archaeologists say a shipwreck believed to have belonged to the pirate Blackbeard will be fully excavated in three years. The shipwreck is off the coast of North Carolina and is thought to have sunk there in 1718. Archaeologists researching the site have recovered numerous artifacts, including cannons, jewelry, dishes and other items. The artifacts are being preserved at East Carolina University.
San Francisco Woman Was Really A Nazi Concentration Camp Guard
A woman has been deported back to Germany after she admitted to having served as a guard at a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. Elfriede Lina Rinkel, 83, began working as a guard at the all-female Ravensbruck concentration camp in June 1944, and served there until the closing weeks of the war.
Author Claims Osama bin Laden Obsessed With Whitney Houston
Osama bin Laden is obsessed with singer Whitney Houston, even though her music is "evil," claims a Sudanese poet and novelist. The writer, Kola Boof, says bin Laden told her he had a "paramount desire" for Houston, wanted to possess her, and talked about having her husband, Bobby Brown, killed. The 37-year-old writer's autobiography, Diary of a Lost Girl, is excerpted in the magazine Harpers' Bazaar.
Tortured Husbands Form "Save Me From My Wife" Organization
Tortured husbands in Jamshedpur city of eastern Indian state of Jharkhand formed an organization "Save Me From My Wife," to get relief from oppression by wives at home, IANS reported on Friday. "We have formed the organization to derive solace from each other against torture from our wives. The group will extend legal and emotional support to hubbies who are subjected to domestic abuse by wives," said Kishan Khanna, its convener.
