A software engineer from Toronto, Canada on Thursday presented to the press the country's first android, a partially-built female robot the inventor said could become an ideal domestic partner when completed.

Le Trung, 33, calls his invention Aiko, the Japanese word for "love child." The robot can respond to touch, visual cues and voice commands. It can clean the house, mix a drink, read newspaper headlines in English and Japanese, and tell the weather.

"She can recognize faces, she can identify medication, she can even butter your toast," Trung said, according to Globe and Mail. "If you grab or squeeze too hard she will try to slap you. She has all senses except for smell," the British newspaper Sun quoted him as saying.

The inventor said he did not create the android for sex. But Trung said its software can be programmed to enable Aiko to imitate orgasm.

Trung built the software that makes Aiko talk and move. The robot weighs more than 70 pounds (32 kilograms) and has a silicone body casing, sensors and camera on her neck.

The talking robot has already cost Trung more than $20,000 to build and he is seeking corporate sponsors to make it walk and do other things. He believes the humanoid can become helpers for hospitals, retirement homes and even airports.
