A 57-year old man allegedly attacked his 81-year-old father with a hammer and hit him on the head, according to authorities.

The San Mateo prosecutors said the suspect Jayantibhai Patel, who is staying in his father's house in Foster City, hit his father with a hammer because he thought the 81-year-old man needed to be sent to the hospital before being sent to a nursing home. Patel wants to keep his father in a nursing home so he can move back to India.

According to Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe, "He was under a belief, we don't know why, that you can't go straight into a nursing home without being in the hospital. He thought, 'I can overcome that problem. I'll put him in the hospital.'"

Wagstaffe said the victim lost consciousness when his son attacked him in the bathroom, and was unconscious for almost an hour before son called paramedics.

Patel was charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse. He was asked to post a $500,000 bail for his temporary release.
