Frenchman Alain Robert, a self-styled rock climber, was only 18 floors away from his destination on Tuesday when he was arrested by police personnel. The 44-year-old, who has been nicknamed "Spiderman" by the local media, was climbing one of Malaysia's 88-story Petronas Twin Towers without any safety equipment.

As Robert reached the 60th floor of the building he was grabbed by firemen waiting for him. Authorities suspect the feat was unauthorized and they plan to charge Robert with trespassing.

It is not the first time that Robert has scaled one of the buildings, which were once the tallest buildings in the world. A decade ago he was stopped on the same floor while attempting the same stunt, according to AFP reports.

According to Christopher Chong, a spokesman for the fire department, Robert was cooperative and he easily agreed to get back into the building when the firemen approached him.

"He smiled, said, 'Okay' and waved the Malaysian flag at us before we pulled him in through the window," AFP quoted Chong as saying.

Police said Robert would be held at a Kuala Lumpur district police station at least overnight to help with investigations into his climb. If found guilty of trespassing Robert could face one year in jail or a fine of $570 or both, according to AFP reports.

Robert has performed several high-profile escapades in the past, including climbing the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Empire State building in New York and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
