Indian runner Santhi Soundarajan won the silver medal at the Asian Games in the women's 800 meters earlier this month. On Monday, according to reports, Soundarajan's medal is in jeopardy of being taken away because she isn't a woman.
Soundarajan took and failed a gender test in Doha, Qatar after the victory.
According to the India Times, the Indian Olympic Association reported that Soundarajan, "does not possess the sexual characteristics of a woman."
The test was given by a medical commission set up by the event's organizers. The group of medical examiners normally consists of a gynecologist, endocrinologist, psychologist, and an internal medicine specialist.
The sprinter is from Tamil Nadu in India and no one in the area knows of her whereabouts.
"If the reports are true, then it is very sad and extremely disappointing," her coach, P. Nagarajan, told the Indian Express.
Despite the possibility of revoking the silver medal, the Tamil Nadu government decided to follow through with rewarding Soundarajan for the accomplishment. The government handed down Rs 15 lakhs ($0.34) for the achievement.
When the India Times asked about the controversy Soundarajan said, "I do not want to talk about it."
Sources have said that Santhi's negative gender report has been delivered to the Asian jury and they will decide if the sprinter will be stripped of the silver.
