An online survey conducted by America Online and Salary.com reveals U.S. workers waste an average of two hours a day in the workplace, not including their standard lunch breaks.

The most commonfare time-wasting actvities? Surfing the web, socializing with co-workers, or, like the protagonist of the film Office Space,

While companies suspected this number to be at one hour, many workers admit to wasting twice that, at a cost of $759 billion in annual paid salary.

Of 10,044 responses, 33 percent said they milked the clock because they didn't have enough work to do, while a quarter of the respondents felt they were being underpaid.

Men and women wasted an equal amout of time at work, but older employees proved more attentive than their younger colleagues; according to the survey, workers over the age of 55, wasted an average of just 30 minutes a day.

Bill Coleman, senior vice president of Salary.com, said some time-wasting activites could be postive. Personal use of the internet, for example, could give someone a new business idea or provide a happier work environment.
