Career Builder found that some adults are as bad as children when it comes to excuses to miss work. Things like 'my dog swallowed my bus pass', 'I'm locked in a bathroom stall and there's no one here to help me', 'I have bad hiccups' and 'I'm sad.'
A Career Builder survey found that 32 percent of people admitted to calling in sick when they felt fine and one in 10 said they did this three or more times in one year. Some listed reasons like running errands, unbreakable plans with family and friends, housework and relaxation.
Although some employers honor the so called, "mental health days," 27 percent said they have fired employers for using bogus excuses to miss work.
Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources at CareerBuilder.com. said, "Although an improvement from last year, the amount of unexcused absences from the office is significant and can be indicative of employee dissatisfaction. Forty-five percent of hiring managers have caught an employee calling in sick with a fake excuse. This begs two questions: do you have the right employees working for your organization and do you have the right employee management practices in place for your staff?"
