The U.S. Public Interest Research Group's latest holiday-time survey finds dozens of toys, still available on store shelves, contain hazards to children's safety.
Dangerous toys include old standards such as latex balloons, as well as newer gadgets like yo-yo water balls - both described in the survey as potential choking hazards.
According to the group, the yo-yo water balls should be banned. The liquid-filled balls are attached to stretchy cords used to swing them overhead like a lasso, which can cause it to wrap around a child's neck.
Many toys are also blacklisted because of small parts that can break off and cause a choking hazard. Other common problems are caps or lids that are too small.
Noise is another factor parents and gift givers should be aware of. The group says hearing is key to a child's development and is easily damaged. Researchers point to things such as toy electric guitars.
Another area to watch for is potential toxins. The group singled out toys such as nail polish and makeup kits that could be harmful if ingested, as well as play mats made from certain kinds of plastics.
