Swiss officials are considering the installation of a giant mirror to provide light to Bondo, a village situated deep inside the steep Bregaglia Valley.
Bondo's 198 residents do not see sunlight from December to February because of its position in the valley. Now the village will decide what can be done about it.
Mayor Renzo Giovanoli said, "That would be added value for our town. We came to a consensus at the village assembly that the study of the project should be further assessed so that we can decide on it in the summer."
The system would resemble one in a small Italian town called Viganella, which is also situated in an Alpine valley. The town used a 26-by-16 feet sheet of reflective steel that is powered to move with the sunlight to capture its rays. The system cost is about $130,000.
