Man Catches Fire During Surgery

A Seattle man undergoing emergency heart surgery went up in flames on the operating table after alcohol that was poured on his skin was ignited by surgical instruments. The patient later died due to heart failure and not of injuries relating to the fire, said Dr. Robert Caplan, medical quality director of Virginia Mason. Although it happened in October 2003, it has only now been revealed after an anonymous letter was sent to the media. The letter mentioned the incident as evidence of unsafe health care at the hospital, and said the patient burned to death.

Great-Great Grandma Shoots Would-Be Robber

Authorities say a suspect is hospitalized after being shot by a great-great-grandmother working at a convenience store. Police say 64-year old Janet Grammer was filling in for a co-worker when the armed suspect walked into the store firing two shots into the back wall. Grammer says he probably caught the robber off guard, "I think he thought I was an old woman and would just give him the money. My life was at stake. I thought he was going to kill me." She grabbed a handgun hidden under the cash register and shot the suspect once in the chest and fired two more shots as the man tried to get away. After dropping his gun and falling to the ground, the suspect got up and fled. Officials say someone fitting the man's description arrived at Shands Jacksonville hospital some time later claiming to have shot himself. He is now facing armed robbery charges. Grammer is the mother of ten with 32 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She says the incident left her very upset fearing she had killed the man, "All I could think about was his poor parents."

Pornography Raises Funds for Sick Children

Slain porn star's agent wants to donate proceeds from her final movie to local Canadian children's hospital. Twenty-three-year-old, Natel King, stage name Taylor Sumers, made her final on-screen appearance in a porn film titled "Lesbian Lover." After being stabbed to death last year, King's agent, Stephen Sirard, wants to donate proceeds made from the film's sales to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children. Sirard said lawyers for his FCF agency in California had asked the hospital if they could highlight the promised gift on the cover of their video, using wording like "all proceeds from the sale of this video go to Sick Kid's Hospital in Toronto." But hospital spokeswoman Carol Duncan said she has not heard anything about the issue, and she declined to say how the hospital might react to a donation of this kind. "We have to send the issue to the ethics committee and the board of directors for consideration," she said. King, described by Sirard as "a porn star with principles," says King raised money for the hospital before she was murdered. King was stabbed to death in February 2004 after a photography shoot near Philadelphia. The photographer has pleaded guilty to murder and could face 25 years in jail.

Man Found After Three Days Trapped On Elevator

A deliveryman is rescued after being stuck in an apartment building elevator in the Bronx for three days. Authorities say 35-year old Ming Kuang is in stable condition at a local hospital being treated for dehydration. Police say Friday night Kuang was making deliveries for the Happy Dragon restaurant where he has worked since arriving from China two years ago. When he did not return after completing his third and final stop, they became concerned. Coworkers located only his bicycle in front of the building where he made his last delivery. Investigators searched in and around the 871-unit Tracey Towers apartment building with bloodhounds and going door-to-door inquiring about Kuang's whereabouts. Cadaver dogs also searched in nearby Cortland Park, the Jerome Park Reservoir, and the Woodlawn Cemetery. An alarm set off in the elevator early Tuesday morning led police to Chen, who contacted authorities using the intercom. Officials are unclear if the alarm had malfunctioned earlier. Investigators say the elevator car became stuck between the fourth and fifth floors. Mechanics were eventually able to override the system and locate Chen who gulped down water upon being freed. Chen speaks little English, but was able to convey to authorities how long he had be stuck by swirling his finger around on his watch. Family members tell police Chen came to the United State illegally from southeastern China where his wife and 12-year old son still live. He paid smugglers $60,000 to bring him to America. He has worked at the Happy Dragon making 40 to 60 deliveries daily working six days a week. The last delivery he made before being stranded was to an off-duty police officer that lives in the building.

Siblings On Ice For 63 Hours

Siblings, Arvydas Gaiciunas, 36, and his sister, Diana Gaiciunaite, 29, emerged from inside a huge 12 ton ice cube today after 63 hours and 31 minutes on ice. The two wore only t-shirts and sweatpants for the entire spectacle. They shattered David Blaine's 2002 effort when he spent nearly 62 hours inside a block of ice. Doctors in the Baltic resort of Palanga said the condition of the siblings was "not bad". They were then taken to a local hospital for observation. "They never did this before but they have trained every day and believe they can do it," their proud father said in a statement to the local media.
